Day 2: The Anticipation… :)

December 2, 2012

I’m talking about my memories this month, sharing a Month of Memories since December is so full of so many traditions.

Disk New Year Backgrounds

Today is Day 2, and my memory today is of helping mom drag all the decorations from the upstairs storage closet, giddy with anticipation as each box was opened.  She probably hated that part.  It was, after all, quite the task.  The storage closet was a bear to get things in and out of, and then once you did wrangle a giant cardboard box out, you had the curved stairway to contend with.  But I couldn’t wait.  I can still remember what that closet always smelled like.  To me, it was Christmas.  🙂

Share another of yours!!

A Month of Memories…

December 1, 2012

I didn’t post all this week…still crazy from the holiday, and so much going on personally and at work.  So I thought I’d pop in on this bright and beautiful Saturday morning, the very first day of December.

There were alot of GRATITUDE posts floating around Facebook in November, everyone posting days of what they were thankful for.  November was all about thankfulness, as it should be.  We should stop and take notice of our blessings…we tend to spend way too much time complaining about what we lack.  So November was a great time to take stock and see things right side up.

December, to me, is about memories.  About all the traditions we had growing up, big and little.  Smells and sounds and tastes and tactile memories that define the month of December and Christmas.  So I’m going to do a little daily memory log this month, sharing my memories with you.  And hopefully it will trigger some of your own, and you’ll share yours!

hot-cup-of-tea

Today, Day #1, is the smell and feel of cold air, drinking hot spiced tea on the old brick porch with my mom.

Enjoy your memories!

Aunt Bernie’s Spicy Crackers! from BEFORE AND EVER SINCE

November 16, 2012

In the spirit of book-y love and snack addiction, I wanted to round out this week with the recipe for the spicy crackers Aunt Bernie makes in BEFORE AND EVER SINCE.  🙂

Cassidy loves them, Emily loves them, even health crazy Holly loves them.  So here you are–your very own recipe to make them yourself.  EASY peasy and sooooo good.  Enjoy!

TEXAS FIRE CRACKERS

(served by Aunt Bernie… good as appetizer or with gumbo…)

1   tsp garlic powder
1   tsp onion powder
1/2 tsp black pepper
3   tbsp crushed red pepper flakes
1  2/3 cup vegetable or olive oil
2   1-oz pkgs Ranch Dressing mix
1  16oz box Saltine crackers

Place vegetable oil, garlic powder, onion powder, black pepper, ranch dressing mix, and crushed red pepper flakes in a 2-gallon plastic zip lock bag, seal, and smoosh with hands to thoroughly combine the oil and spices. Place crackers into bag, seal, and turn over and over to cover the crackers with the spice mix. Let the bag sit for about an hour, then turn them again. Repeat several more times until crackers are well-coated with spice mix. The longer they sit in the mix, the better.  Remove crackers and let air dry.  Serve!

Now you can make these for your family…or make them for yourself as a wonderful snack while you curl up and read!  LOL!  Enjoy!

Off The Beaten Path with Cynthia Ellingsen

November 14, 2012

Here we are again at Off The Beaten Path!  A once-a-month opportunity to get to know a very special romance or women’s fiction author, in a fun and hopefully interactive way.   We all like to get to know our favorite authors a little better, and I want to make that fun for everyone.

This month, I’m so excited to have the fabulous Cynthia Ellingsen here!!

*cue applause*

Cynthia and I met at this past summer’s RWA National Conference, where our mutual editor introduced us at the Berkley cocktail party.  We were fast friends!  What fun we had out on the patio (waiting for the heater) brainstorming promo ideas and people watching.  🙂  Cynthia is hysterically funny, witty, gorgeous, fearless, and one of those rare people that look you in the eye with so much intensity and genuine interest in what you’re saying, that it blows you away.  She’s a gem, this one!  And a very talented author as well!  Her first book, THE WHOLE PACKAGE, came out last year, and it’s a hoot!  If you love stories about best friends and the crazy antics they can get into, this one’s for you!  And she’s got another winner on the way with MARRIAGE MATTERS in March!  (available for preorder!)

But I’m going to let Cynthia talk now…  so…  🙂

 *  *  *  *

Me:  Hey Cynthia!! *waving from Texas*  First question…Top ingredients on any food product are the primary make up of that food.  What top three words would you use to describe yourself?  And you can’t use “writer”, because that’s too easy.  🙂

Cynthia:  *waves from Kentucky*   1) Funny, 2) friendly, 3) Aries.

Me:   I love candles and burn them year round, and my family knows my preferences when it comes to scents.  What are yours?  If not candles, maybe lotion or cologne?

Cynthia:   Vanilla! I love the smell of a vanilla candle or a pumpkin spice candle. And I wish they could create a candle called “fireplace”, because I absolutely love that smell.

Me:  Oh…I would love a “fireplace” one too.   Okay, next question… I cry at sad movies…especially animal ones.   What type of movies take you down?

Cynthia:   Dead Poet’s Society. It’s so good, so inspirational. I think I’ve cried every single time I’ve seen it.

Me:   If you could go back and tell your younger self one important thing, what would it be?

Cynthia:   To buy stock in Apple! And Starbucks! And Apple! (Oh, dear. Was this answer supposed to be something uplifting? Fail.)

Me:  (laughing)  Starbucks is like the mother ship to me, as well as a tall glass of sweet tea. What is your favorite beverage?

Cynthia:   I really love a hearty smoothie with blueberries and whatever else. A café by my house sells one with peanut butter and blueberries. So good – like drinking a peanut butter and jelly sandwich.

Me:  Okay now I want a peanut butter and jelly sandwich…sigh.  🙂   If you could pick a dream vacation where money was no object, what would it be?

Cynthia:   Ooh, a Four Seasons getaway in Maui and Kauai with my husband. Hawaii’s so beautiful – we love it. When are you sending the tickets again? I’ve already got my lei on!

Me:   Sure!!!  Tickets are on their way, via carrier pigeon!  LOL!   Okay… If you could go back and revisit another day at any point in your life, what would it be?

Cynthia:   Aww, how fun would that be?! I vote for any holiday with my whole family. Such good memories.

Me:   I know you and I already did this together over Karen White, but is there anyone else you would be a total crazy fan girl over if you met them in person?

Cynthia:   Ha! Yes, I’m sure Karen White was like, “Whoa. Who are these two crazy girls?” But she was so awesome.  If given the opportunity to flip out again, I think I’d probably get gaga over any author I read all the time when I was young. Judy Blume, obviously. Beverly Cleary, for sure. Ann M. Martin, no question.   And if we want to stroll away from literary and on over to the favorite band category, I would light up like a Christmas tree if I bumped into Coldplay on the street. And in this scenario, they’d certainly be singing.

Me:   What is your favorite curl-up-on-the-couch-and-hibernate comfort food?

Cynthia:   Anything salty. I went through a big Cheetos phase. It’s probably for the best that’s over.

Me:   Don’t even get me started on Cheetos.  O.o   So… what is your favorite all time movie that you could watch over and over?

Cynthia:   Since we’re approaching the holiday season, I’m gonna go with a whole series: A Christmas Story, Rudolph and Chevy Chase’s Christmas Vacation. Snuggled up with the hubs, a big fuzzy blanket and some snacks, this sounds like a perfect scenario.

Absolutely amazing to have Cynthia here with us today, and now she’s graciously giving away a signed copy of her book, THE WHOLE PACKAGE!  I’m telling you, you don’t want to miss this!   Leave a comment for Cynthia below, and a random winner will be chosen tonight to win!

So jump in there and enter!!  Good luck!

Cynthia is an author and screenwriter who lives in Lexington, KY with her husband.  THE WHOLE PACKAGE is her debut novel, and her second novel, MARRIAGE MATTERS, will be out in March 2013.

My squee moments…

November 12, 2012

I mentioned that I was signing at the John Cooper School Signature Author Series last Friday…

Did I mention that I was going to meet Kathryn Stockett?

Well I did!  I mean, not like hey we’re bff’s and dishing about lotion scents and recipes, but I did get my picture taken with her and Tate Taylor, who did the movie version of THE HELP.

Yeah, I was excited.  AND if you didn’t see me squeeing all over Facebook, I had a childhood fangirl moment with the oldest Hardy Boy, when he was there with two other authors as the cover artist.  He does photography now.  AND he gushed over my cover.  And told me how clever my chapter booklets were.  AND I got a picture with him too!

 (me and Parker Stevenson)

Yay!

So…now back to reality, but during that reality, today I’m at The Book Pushers, talking about the hugest theme in BEFORE AND EVER SINCE, which is the power of secrets.  Stop by for a chance at a giveaway!

Y’all have a great day!

Life Lesson #8 from savvy Emily Lockwood

November 8, 2012

BEFORE AND EVER SINCE is now available!  I get lots of questions asking me what it’s about.

Basically, the main character, Emily Lockwood has alot on her plate.  She is successful in her own right, with a solid real estate career, but has a headstrong daughter, a mother who marches to her own drummer, and an ex-husband who needs sex therapy.  Enter into this picture a house with an agenda, and the return of her first love, rocking a tool belt and a paintbrush and dark eyes full of secrets, and Emily just flat out has things to get through and get over.  I call them the “Emily Lockwood Life Lessons”.

We can all learn things from Emily.  🙂  And this is the last one she has to share.  I’ve so enjoyed sharing Emily and her life lessons with you!  I hope you’ve enjoyed it too.

Life Lesson #8 from Emily in BEFORE AND EVER SINCE…

MOTHERS KNOW EVERYTHING, NO MATTER HOW OLD YOU GET.

…an excerpt from the book…

I rounded a corner of the wall and leaned my back against it, breathing in the cold air fast to stop the burn from coming back up.

But it wasn’t to be stopped.  Everything stung on its way out.  My skin felt hot, my eyes burned, my stomach threatened to upheave the nachos.  My chest felt as if it would cave in from the lack of oxygen, as my sobs took over and beat the crap out of me.  I slid down the rough brick wall till I was half sitting, half squatting on the ground.

Why the hell did he have to come back?  If he didn’t want me then, fine.  So why was he back now, acting as if he did?  Holding me like that.  Looking at me like that.  Stirring up old shit.

“Emily!”

I jumped half out of my skin at the sound of my mother’s voice, and I scrambled unsuccessfully to get to my feet.

“Jesus, just—stay where you are, I’ll come to you,” she said, slowly getting to the ground.  “Just takes me a minute.”

“I—just needed some air, Mom, I’m—”

“Oh yeah, I can see you’re the picture of wonderful,” she said.  “Everyone has meltdowns behind buildings when things are going well.”

“I know,” I croaked.  “I must look like a lunatic.”

“Luckily I speak the language.”  My mom took one of my hands.  “You’re in love with that man.”

New tears.  New burn.  “Well, that made me feel better, thanks.”  The hiccupping sobs returned.  It was all kinds of fabulous that other people could see what I was killing myself to keep hidden.  Of course, the latest floorshow probably hadn’t left much to the imagination.  We danced like people in love.

“Damn him,” I hissed.

Life Lesson #5 from savvy Emily Lockwood

November 5, 2012

BEFORE AND EVER SINCE, my second full length novel with Berkley, is almost here!

Life Lesson #5 from Emily in BEFORE AND EVER SINCE…

DON’T BRING UP THE PAST UNLESS YOU’RE PREPARED TO BE BACKED INTO A CORNER.

…an excerpt from the book…

The smoldering look in his eyes was the old Ben.  The one that once knew all my secrets and loved me anyway.  He blinked the moment free and broke eye contact, looking back toward the kitchen as he raked fingers through his hair.

“No one ever came here,” he said, walking behind the island bar.  “We didn’t want anybody here.”  He held out a hand for the file I’d forgotten I had.  “So what was the deal with the realtor lady at your mom’s?”

I cleared my throat, the temperature and subject change knocking me off balance.  I laid the file on the smooth cream and brown granite and turned to the page in question.

“Old history,” I said.

“So am I, but you don’t run off when I arrive,” he said, thereby yanking my gaze back to his.

I started to point out the difference, but then wondered if there really was one.  “Good point,” I said, sliding the paper to him.  “One of you climbed off my husband and screwed me over.  The other one climbed off my roof.”

His eyes narrowed.  “So he didn’t change,” Ben said, effectively ignoring the comment regarding him.  “I wondered about that.”

“No,” I said.  “He didn’t.”  I pulled the pen off the folder and handed it to him.  “Evidently, neither did you.”

“Me?”

“You know what?” I said, laying the pen down.  “You and Bobby deal with this and bring it back to me when you’re done.”

“Where are you going?” I heard him ask from behind me as I made a beeline for the door.

“Home,” I said, remembering even as I said it that I had to go back for Cassidy.  “Damn it,” I muttered.

“What are you so angry about?” he asked, making me turn around.

He kept walking so I did too, backward.  “This push-pull thing you do,” I said.  “I don’t understand it, and I’m tired of it.  I’m sick and tired of avoiding the one thing I really want to know.”

I felt the hardness of the door press against my back, and he kept moving forward.  I sucked in a breath and lifted my chin to appear defiant as he put his hands against the door on either side of my head and looked down at me from so close I could feel his breath on my lips.

“Why you made the choice you did?”

He said each word slow and deliberate, matching a rawness I hadn’t seen in his eyes since he’d been back.  That, coupled with the sudden need to close that half inch between us, hit me in the gut with so much emotion, that for a second I didn’t make sense of the words themselves.  When I did, I was confused.  Choice?

“What about what you chose?” I whispered, forcing myself to focus on his eyes and not his mouth.

A shrill ring broke the quiet and he clenched his jaw and reached into his pocket.  His eyes never left mine, but I used the moment to put my hands against his chest and gently push him back.

“Hello,” he said, his voice cracked and rough.

I turned and let myself out, grateful for that phone call.  Another thirty seconds at that proximity and I would have spilled my guts, forgiven him for everything, and tested out that rug.

We interrupt the regularly scheduled program…

November 3, 2012

Taking a break from Emily’s Life Lessons and Hot Tool Guys today…. 🙂   I know, I know, but it’s Saturday and I think a little time away from sexy men and snarky moments will be good for us.   Right?  Besides, then we can truly appreciate them again when Monday rolls around.

Today, I thought I’d pay homage to Friday nights.

What?  Friday nights?  What on earth does that mean??  Well, I live in Texas, and this time of year is about football.  High school football.  As in the real life Friday Night Lights.

Some people might think that was just a movie.  Or a TV series.  But let me assure you, it was all based on the real deal.  And I live smack in the middle of it.  You renew your season tickets every year, and keep them forever.  Families pass “their seats” down through family, so it’s not unusual to know where the Boudreaux’s sit, and that the Fontenot’s are up there on row 39, just under the press box.  They’ve been there for as long as you can remember.   Our team is the Indians, and our colors are purple and white.  I grew up here, and I know you are born with purple blood and wear cute little outfits that mimic the cheerleaders and drill team and go to the pep rallies and games from the time you can walk, and will be sitting in the front in the wheelchair section, still donning a purple shirt, when you are 98.   It’s just the way it is.  🙂

We are coming to the end of the season…just one more game left in the regular season, and unfortunately we didn’t make it into the playoffs this year, but more importantly for me, it’s the end of it for my little girl.  Who isn’t so little anymore.

It is her senior year, she plays the flute in the band, this is the last time she will march into that magnificent home stadium and do the famous Marching I at halftime.  I remember this feeling, because 20+ years ago (eek) I was there doing the same thing.

Here are some pics I’ve taken this season to share with you.

Freshman year on the track…

And now her senior year on the track…

Oh how they grow!!!

and band parent night for the seniors…

So do you have any special traditions in your town?

The 3rd Thing You’ll Learn from reading BEFORE AND EVER SINCE…

November 1, 2012

No tour stop today, so let’s get straight to the business of what Emily has to tell us.  🙂  The 3rd Lesson in BEFORE AND EVER SINCE…

Emily Life Lesson #3…  Never say you’re never going to do something, like going out for girls night in a powder blue Winnebago.  It guarantees you will.

I wasn’t going to ride in Big Blue.

Aunt Bernie, Holly, Cassidy, myself and my mother were dressed to go out, looking good, feeling good, and I wasn’t about to ruin that by piling in a giant trailer.

Aunt Bernie was the one who’d brought it up, pointing out that we all had smallish cars and five people would be crowded.  Holly eyed the monstrosity warily.

“I think we’ll be just fine,” I said.  “It’s just across town, we won’t be in the car long.”

“Seriously?” Cassidy said, looking like she was ready to burn up Manhattan instead of Main Street.  She had on a tight little red dress that fell off one shoulder and was made to bring men to their knees.  “Come on, Mom, it’ll be a hoot!”

I stared her up and down.  “Dressed like that, you want to drive around in a Smurf-mobile?”

“Hey!” Aunt Bernie said, hands on royal blue hips.  Royal blue everything.  It was evidently the color of the day.  “You know, we can just leave your little butt here on the curb,” she said loudly.

I held up my hands. “Sorry.  I just pictured a little nicer evening.”  I gestured at Mom in her black pantsuit and pearls she wore to any nice event, and Holly in her little green dress which was eerily similar to my requisite little black dress, but made her hair look gorgeous.  “I was told to dress nice for Mom’s birthday.”

“And we are,” Cassidy piped in, linking arms with Aunt Bernie.  I wanted to know what day she sold out to the other side, because I’d missed it.  “And I think that makes it even more fun to ride around and make it a party bus.”

My mom laughed and turned around before she could get targeted.

“A party bus?” Holly said.  “Have you ever been on a party bus?”

“As a matter of fact I have,” she said, crossing her arms.  “And I think with the right attitude,” she said, throwing a glare my way.  “We can make this whatever we want it to be.  For Nana.”

“Oh lord,” Holly mumbled, smoothing her dress and looking around as if people who knew her might be hiding in the trees.

“Mom, what do you want to do?” I asked.

She just grinned.  “Anything that will get us going.  I’m hungry.”

“Well, there you go,” Aunt Bernie said.  “Let’s get to The Grille.”

“The Grille?” Holly said quickly.  “I thought we were going to Phillipe’s?”

“Oh hell no,” Cassidy said, laughing.  “We’d never get reservations there, why’d you think that?”

“Be—cause of how you said to dress, I guess—” Holly said, trailing her words miserably as reality settled on her.

“Come on,” Cassidy urged.  “Where’s your sense of fun?  We dress to the nines and make a splash, looking like movie stars going to eat burgers and nachos.  Party it up with some beer and champagne on the bus, just like it was a limo.”

“Well, except that I’m driving it,” Aunt Bernie said.

“I can get Josh to come drive it, if you want,” Cassidy offered.

“Oh good God, no,” Aunt Bernie said, patting her on the back.  “Nobody drives Big Blue but me.  He’d hit everything on the way.”

“And where will you park it?” Holly asked.

“I always find a way,” Aunt Bernie said, looking proud.

I looked at Holly, knowing it was inevitable.  I was riding Big Blue.

Ever had a crazy night out in something odd?  I’ve never done a Winnebago…but I have trolled the beach in a psychadelic hearse once.  There’s a story…  🙂

Don’t Let Go Review from The Romance Room

Sharla Lovelace has produced one of the most emotionally charged and beautifully written second-chance love stories I have read in a very long time. The characters, the storyline, the twists, the surprises, the emotions, the tears.. everything… it’s just the most perfect book. - The Romance Room

The Reason is You review by Kathryn Magendie

“A spot-on debut novel, Sharla Lovelace’s prose is smart, witty, funny, with a hot sexy edge that makes The Reason Is You an oh-so-tantalizing romantic journey…the line between our world and the mystical one is deliciously blurred.” ~ Kathryn Magendie, author of Tender Graces, Secret Graces, Family Graces, Sweetie

The Reason is You review by Therese Walsh

“The Reason Is You is a romantic story about love, ghosts, and second chances.  But under all of that, it’s a story about redemption.  This novel is the definition of a page-turner.” ~ Therese Walsh, author of The Last Will of Moira Leahy

Before and Ever Since review by Romantic Times Book Reviews

"Lovelace does a great job of bridging the past with the present. The characters are smart, funny and well rounded. It is refreshing to see a female character, with obvious vulnerabilities, exhibit such strength in situations that would make other women cringe." ~Romantic Times Book Reviews

Before and Ever Since review by Joyfully Reviewed

"Before And Ever Since is a beautifully crafted, thought provoking story that engaged me from the first few words. The chemistry between Emily and Ben was sizzling hot, and I was quite enamored of these two attempting to work things out…that I could NOT put this story down until I finished it."  ~ Joyfully Reviewed, November 2012 Recommended Read

Before and Ever Since review by Cocktails & Books

"Sharla Lovelace is a gifted storyteller. She creates characters that are very down-to-earth, flawed and understand that there isn’t a fairy tale happily ever after waiting for them at the end. It’s raw, it’s gritty and it’s not tied up with a pretty bow, which makes it feel so very real. I look forward to reading more from Sharla Lovelace in the future."    ~Cocktails & Books
