In my month of memories, today is about the Tree…as in with a capital T.
I tried to find a picture that really looked like our tree, but I couldn’t. I think this one is close though. It’s been a while.
Besides all that, the point is that we had a fake tree because of my brother’s allergies, and we had the kind that came in limbs marked in what looked like colored fingernail polish. You matched the colors with corresponding paint marks in the holes. It was my job to organize all the limbs and get it together as far as I could reach.
My mom kept that tree for probably 30 years. It was familiar. Why change? 🙂

When I was younger, we always had a real tree. I still remember how sharp and pokey those darn needles were. My sister and I would decorate the tree and walk away looking like we had been mauled by a cat.
Ten years ago, my oldest son was born two months before Christmas. We put up a real tree like we always had done in the past. In less than 6 hours, our new baby was home from the emergency room with a nebulizer attached to his face and our newly decorated tree was outside on the front porch. Yep. He was allergic. And the poor thing still has allergy-induced asthma 10 years later.
So our trees are the equivalent of a Ken doll’s manparts. All plastic. 🙁

Love your memories, Sharla. The last real tree I had was the Christmas after my father died. I was seventeen and depressed because my mom said she would not have a tree. Three days before Christmas my cousin arrived from Poughkeepsie with a real tree on the roof of his car. I ran to the stores and bought new lights and ornaments and put it up that very day. In my mind, it was the best tree I ever had. Also, she gave me all those decorations when I left to get married and I have many of them still … and one from HER first tree when she was sixteen in 1927 and I cherish it … three Mercury glass bells.
