A quickie for ya…

For you writers…

What is the first line of your latest book or wip?  Does it hook?

I’ll share the first line of BEFORE AND EVER SINCE (second book):

There is a distinct moment when you know that your day has gone down the toilet.

Okay, I showed you mine, you show me yours!  🙂

First line of my debut novel, due out July, 2013. THE SWEET SPOT is set in the world of Pro Bull Riding.

The grief counselor told the group to be grateful for what they had left. After lots of considering, Charla Rae decided she was grateful for the bull semen.

Okay, this is from something I’m sending out in March:

I was certain something lethal was about to hurl through space and split me in two. As it turned out, Ben didn’t need a ballistic missile or a grenade launcher, he only needed a piece of notepaper.

    More than one line, but…..

“Hey, Bradford, aren’tcha goin’ to class today? It’s too early in the semester to go skippin’ out, bud.”
My friend never left well enough alone. Brian was a joker, and every word out of his mouth blared loud enough for everyone walking across the quad in the middle of campus to hear.

Wow, Sharla–we are on similar wavelengths. Here’s the first line from Taming Kate:

“Kate Minola knew exactly what kind of day it would be the moment the dog shit in her purse.”

Sorry!! That’s the first line of the book not a comment on the posts! I just realized… duh. It’s the first line from Winds of Change, my debut novel coming out in a matter of weeks… it’s in copy editing and cover design. #2 is nearing completion as well.

Oh Mary, that’s funny! I figured it out, but that line made me sit back and say, “whoa!” before I figured it out!

    Good first line!

The Reason is You review by Therese Walsh

“The Reason Is You is a romantic story about love, ghosts, and second chances.  But under all of that, it’s a story about redemption.  This novel is the definition of a page-turner.” ~ Therese Walsh, author of The Last Will of Moira Leahy

Before and Ever Since review by Cocktails & Books

"Sharla Lovelace is a gifted storyteller. She creates characters that are very down-to-earth, flawed and understand that there isn’t a fairy tale happily ever after waiting for them at the end. It’s raw, it’s gritty and it’s not tied up with a pretty bow, which makes it feel so very real. I look forward to reading more from Sharla Lovelace in the future."    ~Cocktails & Books
